Sailing With The Stars
Tiger Beat’s got the scoop, plus some fabulous celebrity pictures, from the annual Sail With The Stars cruise. This year Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Wil Horneff, Andrew Keegan, Rider and Shiloh Strong, A.J. Langer and more participated. Come check out the fun!
Carnival Cruise Line’s annual Sail With The Stars celebrity cruise is always something to look forward to. And this year, with a stellar group of stars including Home Improvement’s Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Jodie Sweetin of Full House fame, Andrew Keegan of Thunder Alley, My So-Called Life’s A.J. Langer, Rider Strong of Boy Meets World and brother Shiloh Strong of The Mommies, Born To Be Wild star Wil Horneff and Angela Watson of Step By Step, cruisers were treated to a little something extra special! For starters, the stars and families who attended this year’s festivities helped to raise over $40,000 for the National Tuberous Sclerosis Association. That’s what we call cruisin’ for a cause!
Plus there was a lot of fun shipboard and at all the neat ports of call the gang stopped at along the way. Some special memories include Rider’s braids (he kept them in for almost the entire trip!), Jodie’s Mr. Bear (which was one of the most popular items at the celebrity charity auction), Andrew and Wil’s jet skiing fun and Jonathan dancing with fans during 50s night in the shipboard disco!
“We all had a lot of fun,” says Wil. “Andrew and I had the best time jetskiing in Aruba. Jodie was really sweet. We had a fun time at the disco at night. Angela is an amazing singer. I enjoyed listening to her sing her country songs. She’s got a great voice. A.J. and her boyfriend spent the whole week shopping and sightseeing. Rider and Shiloh were neat. Rider’s hair was pretty interesting. Jonathan Taylor Thomas and I kicked butt at Win, Lose or Draw.”
One of the coolest things about this annual event is that it brings kids just like you into contact with the kids you see on TV and in the movies. Both the regular kids and the stars participated in fun activities like autographs and photo sessions, scavenger hunts (we hear Andrew Keegan and his younger brother Casey were particularly good at this!), Kids’ Olympics, Lip Service lip synching contests, storytelling with the stars, Q&A sessions with the stars and much, much more! Plus there was a different celebrity event—like a meet-the-stars breakfast or a nightly dinner hosted by your faves—every single day and night!
“Lip Service was my favorite,” says Wil. “It was fun because you got to watch people make total fools of themselves. I had to lip sync to “All I Wanna Do” by Sheryl Crow. It was pretty embarrassing.”
You see, there’s a really important purpose of this event. Sail With The Stars brings regular kids like you together with your favorite teenage celebrities to raise money for very special causes such as this year’s beneficiary, the National Tuberous Sclerosis Association. Tuberous Sclerosis is a common but little publicized genetic disorder that can cause seizures, learning disabilities and behavioral problems in kids. A percentage of the cruise fares families pay to participate goes to the charity to fund research, prevention and the care of kids.
One of the other ways money was raised to fight this disease was the annual celebrity auction which took place on the ship. All of the celebrities in attendance donated autographed and personal items to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. (In fact Tiger Beat donated a bunch of celebrity autographed t-shirts too!) Some of the most popular items auctioned included Jodie’s stuffed animal, Jonathan’s signed copy of the script from his upcoming movie Tom Sawyer and Andrew Keegan’s driver’s permit!
Needless to say, the kids and the stars had an absolutely great time and would be delighted to be invited back again next year (in fact, Jonathan, Rider, Shiloh and Angela are repeat cruisers.) Who knows? Maybe next time you’ll be waving bon voyage along with them!
The next upcoming Sail With The Stars celebrity cruise features former Full House stars Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. This special cruise departs from Florida on December 16, 1995 and spends a week sailing the gorgeous waters of the Caribbean with stops in Cozumel, Mexico, Grand Cayman Island and Ocho Rios, Jamaica.
Next July, another all-star celebrity cruise will launch from Vancouver, Canada and sail to Alaska!
JTT: How I Spent My Summer Vacation!
It’s a known fact that soon-to-be 14-year-old Home Improvement star Jonathan Taylor Thomas loves his work. That’s the reason why he’s so willing to work so long and so hard on so many projects—he just loves it! He’s the happiest when he’s filming a movie or making people laugh as middle brother ‘Randy’ on his hit show.
This summer, after the TV season ended for his long running show, Jonathan was off to Alabama to begin working on another exciting project, a new movie of Tom Sawyer. Here, he teamed with The Client star Brad Renfro and Baby-Sitters’ Club’s Rachel Leigh Cook to bring to life this classic American adventure. In Huntsville (where the movie filmed) the hours were long, the weather was hot but all the kids pulled together to make the months they spent together fun.
But no matter how much you love your job, there has to be some time for fun. So after Tom Sawyer wrapped, Jonathan, his mom Claudine and his brother [Joel] took a week to chill out with a fishing trip! Since Jonathan’s favorite sport is fishing, it was the perfect way to celebrate his summer break.
After a week of wading through streams and baiting hooks, Jonathan and his family were ready for some sun and fun. So they packed up and headed off on Carnival Cruise’s fabulous Sail With The Stars event. As you can see by the photos on these pages, Jonathan, the other celebrities who participated and every regular family who joined in had a blast.
But even the best vacations have to end, so after a few days home, Jonathan was on a plane to Europe. This time, it was to film a live action version of the classic fable Pinocchio. Jonathan’s role in the movie (which you’ll see at the end of the flick when the puppet Pinocchio’s wish comes true and he magically becomes a real boy) only took two weeks to film but the experience was worth it! Not only did Jonathan get a chance to work with Academy Award winning veteran actor Martin Landau, but he also got to see some of Prague, Czechoslovakia—a city in a country he’d never been to before!
By the time that project ended, Jonathan was ready to fly home, return to the fifth season of Home Improvement and get back to his schoolwork. In all, it’s been a summer to remember!
